[10:16] Starlight Darkmatter: I am pleased to say that three articles on my topic (open access/open data publishing) were published on my blog with Nature.com and Scientific American -- and there are some futher publications related with Nature

[10:16] Tim Faith: would you post links to the SLBA website?
[10:16] hectorc2: Kudos to Starlight
[10:16] Ellen is online.
[10:16] Treasure Ballinger: Nice
[10:16] Starlight Darkmatter: sure :)
[10:16] Tim Faith: i think there would be interest in reading up on your work
[10:17] Second Life: Items successfully shared.
[10:17] Agenda Faromet is online.
[10:17] Starlight Darkmatter: I was invited to submit a comment to the print journal nature on Lab notebooks, if anyone wants to chat about the legalities with me later
[10:18] Tim Faith: hi agenda
[10:18] Lyra Snowpaw: Hi Agenda
[10:18] Faye Blackheart: Morning Agenda
[10:18] Agenda Faromet: Hi, all.
[10:18] Tim Faith: any other changes to the schedule of CLE/presentations?
[10:18] Dolci Woodget waves
[10:18] Faye Blackheart: Looks like a fun packed year :)
[10:18] Tim Faith: or are there any additional cle topics that folks would like to present on?
[10:19] Treasure Ballinger: Possibly disability in virtual; I have another topic in mind but not sure yet; can have a little time to ponder it?
[10:20] Treasure Ballinger: or does it need to be set today?
[10:20] Lyra Snowpaw: Hi Ellen
[10:20] Tim Faith: treasure - that would be great
[10:20] Tim Faith: we can add additional topics next month
[10:20] Ellen: Hi all, sorry to be late
[10:20] Tim Faith: or in between
[10:20] Tim Faith: hi ellen
[10:20] Treasure Ballinger: ok
[10:20] Starlight Darkmatter: Treasure, Virtual Ability would be a great org to bring in for that talk... she can invite her group for the audience
[10:20] Dolci Woodget: Are there transcripts available of previous presentations? As a creator and business owner, I'm especially interested in the Copyright and Fair Use bits.
[10:20] Tim Faith: some are available on our SLBA website
[10:21] Treasure Ballinger: Gentle Heron has presented here before on it; but it's been awhile
[10:21] Treasure Ballinger: couple years I think actually
[10:21] Lyra Snowpaw: They are on the Bar website Dolci
[10:21] Dolci Woodget: Thank you! ㋡
[10:21] Tim Faith: http://slbarassn.ning.com/
[10:21] Tim Faith: ellen - would you be interested in participating on the marketing committee?
[10:21] Tim Faith: we need a FB fan page, i think
[10:22] Ellen: If we can communicate outside SL, definitely yes. I don't get in-world that often any more
[10:22] Dolci Woodget: Don't you actually have two FB pages?
[10:22] Tim Faith: treasure could you reach out to gentle heron about joining us
[10:22] Agenda Faromet: Not everyone uses FB. How about a LinkedIn group?
[10:22] Tim Faith: dolci - yes, and sadly no one is an admin
[10:22] Dolci Woodget: ah ok, I liked both lol
[10:22] Baeric Constantine: I dont use FB
[10:22] Tim Faith: i think we also need a linkedin group
[10:22] Tim Faith: lol
[10:22] Darius Winterwolf: That would be good
[10:22] Agenda Faromet: Yeah, I don't use FB either.
[10:22] Treasure Ballinger: I can, Tim, but her groups are full. I'll chat with her.
[10:23] Ellen: Both FB and LinkedIn sounds good to me, no need to choose one or the other
[10:23] Tim Faith: can anyone set that up on linkedin?
[10:23] Treasure Ballinger: brb
[10:23] Ellen: I can work on these things, e-mail my business e-mail address which is: lawoffice@ellenross.com
[10:23] Tim Faith: treasure - thanks
[10:24] Tim Faith: ellen - thanks
[10:24] Tim Faith: faye is chairing the marketing committee
[10:25] Treasure Ballinger: back
[10:25] Tim Faith: Lyra - would you like to speak next?
[10:25] Tim Faith: on tier donations?
[10:26] Starlight Darkmatter: Did someone offer to set up the LI group?
[10:26] Lyra Snowpaw: As I am sure everyone knows by now, the Bar expenses exceed our income and have for some time. Obviously, we are looking at any and all possible solutions to offset costs for maintaining the group. One idea we are considering is asking both group members and others SL users to consider donating any left over tier they have each month. If we get enough donations, it could offset the cost of the sim by half.
[10:26] Starlight Darkmatter: I have heard that LL has re-instituted the non-profit 50 percent discount
[10:26] Treasure Ballinger: I actually thought you could only do that on mainland. Is Justitia a private estate?
[10:26] Lyra Snowpaw: This would be substantial in helping us
[10:27] Tim Faith: justitia is a private estate
[10:27] Lyra Snowpaw: oh I will definitely look into that
[10:27] Lyra Snowpaw: we do have our 503(c)
[10:27] Tim Faith: but we could talk with sam as an offset to our rent paid to him here
[10:27] Tim Faith: lyra - we are a 501(c)(6)
[10:27] Tim Faith: yes
[10:27] hectorc2: My advice is to pay a one time fee and move justitia to the blake and lease. That is where the money is
[10:27] Starlight Darkmatter: The nonprofit discount is applicable to any location in SL
[10:28] Starlight Darkmatter: That could cut your expense in half :)
[10:28] Lyra Snowpaw: Well, I am not sure how Sam would feel about deeding to the group. . .
[10:29] Tim Faith: we can chat with him - he's open to discussion
[10:29] Agenda Faromet: I mailed Sam about the non-profit discount some time ago. Here's one of the articles about it: https://modemworld.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/ll-offer-discounted-reg...
[10:29] Lyra Snowpaw: no, I just donated 884 m2 to the Arete group
[10:29] Lyra Snowpaw: so it does work
[10:30] Faye Blackheart: The deeding only affects tier on mainland
[10:30] Baeric Constantine: Whatever happened to 'Portage Bay Ventures'? as a side note question....
[10:30] Faye Blackheart: private estate fees are not subject to square meter reduction in tier
[10:30] Lyra Snowpaw: However, we will most definitely look into the non-profit discount
[10:31] Tim Faith: is there anyone that can work with lyra on this?
[10:31] Tim Faith: so we can discuss at our August meeting?
[10:31] Treasure Ballinger: I can
[10:31] Lyra Snowpaw: thanks Treasure
[10:31] hectorc2: me too just Im me
[10:31] Lyra Snowpaw: thanks Hector
[10:31] Starlight Darkmatter: Well, the educators listserv is a great resource to talk about it or ask questions
[10:32] Tim Faith: can you post the address to the chat?
[10:32] Starlight Darkmatter: There is a huge back discussion on this subject... sure give me a sec
[10:32] Tim Faith: great
[10:33] Tim Faith: any other questions on that topic?
[10:33] Starlight Darkmatter: https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/educators
[10:33] Starlight Darkmatter: educators@lists.secondlife.com
[10:33] Tim Faith: ty
[10:33] Tim Faith: if not i would like to talk about membership
[10:33] Treasure Ballinger: thanks
[10:34] Starlight Darkmatter: It is called SLED
[10:34] Starlight Darkmatter: np
[10:34] Tim Faith: we have 32 members that have renewed for this season
[10:34] hectorc2: I think it would be very easy to move our sim to blake sea, get traffic and rent out our properies undercutting Mr. Mark twain White who commands over 4,000 linden a wekk for over 2000 prims
[10:34] hectorc2: imho
[10:34] Lyra Snowpaw sighs Mark Twain White. . . I know that name
[10:35] hectorc2: That is land opened to the United Sailing Sims
[10:35] Lyra Snowpaw: I have a very nice property on the Blake Sea, not a whole sim tho. . .
[10:35] Agenda Faromet raises a hand.
[10:35] Lyra Snowpaw: we might be able to use part of it
[10:35] Tim Faith: yes agenda
[10:35] Starlight Darkmatter: I think Sam should be in on the discussion about the land so maybe when he can be here next time?
[10:35] Dolci Woodget: You can not move one sim to the Blake Sea area, there is a hefty procedure to get approved, one being a minimum of five full sims.
[10:36] Ellen: I agree with Starlight about bringing Sam into the discussion
[10:36] hectorc2: Great point Dolci
[10:36] Agenda Faromet: We have a unique problem when it comes to renting out property on our sim, regardless of whether or not we move it. It's something Sam and I have discussed at length every time he has asked about renting offices outside our group.
[10:36] Faye Blackheart: yeah for sure
[10:36] hectorc2: we need traffic babies
[10:36] hectorc2: , babies
[10:37] Ellen: Agenda, what is the unique problem?
[10:37] Treasure Ballinger: What's the unique problem?
[10:37] Agenda Faromet: We /could/ open ourselves up to renting outside SLBA, but if we do, then we need to be very careful about appearing to /endorse/ whoever rents on our sim. For instance, copyright infringement is a massive problem here in SL. If we start renting to a copybotter's store, then we -- the SL /Bar/ /Association/ -- appear to endorse that infringement.
[10:37] hectorc2: Rents = we don't have to tax ourselves
[10:38] hectorc2: I don't think so
[10:38] hectorc2: That is their problem
[10:38] hectorc2: if they copyright
[10:38] Dolci Woodget: hector, trust me, it makes the land owners look awful, too
[10:38] Tim Faith: there is some caselaw on agenda's point
[10:38] Agenda Faromet: It is also our problem. If it is a sim owned by the SL Bar Association and we are renting to them.
[10:38] hectorc2: Now if they hire me as an atty then that is different
[10:38] Faye Blackheart: yeah it does, pulls the reputation down badly
[10:39] Treasure Ballinger: Right; Virtual Ability solves that by having residential sims only; no businesses. You DO have to be very careful.
[10:39] Tim Faith: agenda, what would you propose?
[10:39] hectorc2: I don't agree at all
[10:39] Tim Faith: to mitigate the risk?
[10:39] Baeric Constantine: No, it would be ours too
[10:40] hectorc2: What if we are renting to a jihadist are we responsible? I don't think so
[10:40] Baeric Constantine: We have to be seen with clean hands
[10:40] Tim Faith: copyright is a little different
[10:40] Agenda Faromet: So far, we have dealt with it by only allowing law-based businesses to rent on Justitia -- no stores. When we had our Law Day event, which brought in several kiosks from prominent stores, they were all stores I had vetted, from vendors I knew personally.
[10:40] Starlight Darkmatter: If we go for nonprofit status, we also may have some rules for that
[10:41] Agenda Faromet: Starlight: we have nonprofit status. We're a 501(c)(6).
[10:41] Dolci Woodget: Do you often have more than 20 avatars attending the CLE's and other stuff?
[10:41] hectorc2: Remember we can be sued for anything in the US, we have to accept some form of minor risk, so don't rent to infringers
[10:41] Starlight Darkmatter: I mean nonprofit discount
[10:41] Treasure Ballinger: It's very trying to suddenly find out you've got a sex slave parlor 3,000 meters up when your land is moderate. LL does have rules and regs for the non profits getting the discount. No businesses.
[10:41] Agenda Faromet: "So don't rent to infringers" is kind of the problem here, Hector.
[10:42] hectorc2: simpe
[10:42] Tim Faith: http://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?q=copyright+vicarious+liabil...
[10:42] Agenda Faromet: ....No. It isn't.
[10:42] hectorc2: simple as pie
[10:42] Treasure Ballinger: businesses selling things, I mean
[10:42] Faye Blackheart: I'd personally rather increase bar dues and donation requests than bring down the outwards appearance of the SLBA because we needed more renteres
[10:42] hectorc2: Now, we want to rent out so we don't have to incur costs in maintaning the SLBAR
[10:42] Ellen: Ruling out all businesses definitely restricts the market. What about allowing (non-sexual) services businesses, such as coaching and consulting?
[10:42] Tim Faith: agenda, what if we had a committee to vet potential renters?
[10:43] hectorc2: You make a covenant like twain White's simple
[10:43] hectorc2 whispers: or link to sub TOS
[10:43] Starlight Darkmatter: Tim, they did this in Scilands also, people had to fill out applications
[10:43] Agenda Faromet: If it were "simple as pie," there wouldn't be anyone in SL renting to infringers. It is extremely hard to tell who is and is not infringing, because copyright is a very difficult area of law to begin with. Tim: that's a possibility, sure. But what would that committee do? Ask to see the vendor's product line? And then research every product? And then ask to see every new product that comes out?
[10:43] Agenda Faromet: I mean, I'd have to hire an intern.
[10:43] Faye Blackheart: And, this is all assuming there is a market for business tenants that want to have a shop here.... the majority of renters are private individuals
[10:43] Tim Faith: i hear ya
[10:44] hectorc2: It is simple from where I see it from experience in 11 years doing this
[10:44] Lyra Snowpaw: I have to say I agree with Faye
[10:44] Treasure Ballinger: I have a covenant 10 miles long. NObody reads them, and then your time is impacted dealing with it. It's 10 miles long because of the things that have come up regularly, causing amendment after amendment. Stuff you never thought of in a million years. Someone will come up with it
[10:44] Agenda Faromet nods at Treasure. "Exactly. And there's always someone looking to be he exception."
[10:44] Dolci Woodget: I think to give an air of credibility, the Bar needs to stand alone
[10:45] Faye Blackheart: I agree
[10:45] Agenda Faromet: I agree, Dolci.
[10:45] Starlight Darkmatter: If the renter has to fill out an application, they could be voted in or not by the Exec Board or General meeting
[10:45] Treasure Ballinger: agree
[10:45] hectorc2: Ok let's make a cruise ship and we can rez it when we neede it
[10:45] Treasure Ballinger: :)
[10:45] Dolci Woodget: if I may be honest, I've nothing to do with the legal field and I think resident perception is likely to see the Bar and RL lawyers role playing being lawyers in sl...
[10:45] hectorc2: Agree Dolci
[10:45] Dolci Woodget: so to really get the word out on how legitimate THIS really is
[10:45] Dolci Woodget: no rentals
[10:45] Baeric Constantine: When we were at Malfelonious we rented to other folk....
[10:46] hectorc2: I think renting from us gives you credibility imho
[10:46] Treasure Ballinger: SLBA is pretty easily researched, for legitimacy........I knew early on in my SL journey that it was legit
[10:46] Agenda Faromet: Yes. Renting from us would give someone credibility. Which, /again/, stresses why our reputation would be on the line.
[10:46] Faye Blackheart: yeah..... you don't see UC Davis' sim dedicated to education on schizophrenia renting to outside individuals to lower its costs....it is an education sim dedicated to public service
[10:46] hectorc2: What reputatiom
[10:46] Treasure Ballinger: lol
[10:47] Baeric Constantine: A good name is to be highly prized
[10:47] hectorc2: We already have a good name individually, right?
[10:47] hectorc2: We are in good standing with our bars?
[10:47] hectorc2: individually, right
[10:47] Agenda Faromet: I agree with Faye, and this is how Sam and I have always done it: only legal services rent here. No stores.
[10:48] hectorc2: Don't increase fees, then
[10:48] Baeric Constantine: That is a good way forward - only legal services
[10:48] Agenda Faromet: You don't come to Justitia to shop, you come to Justitia to learn about the law in SL.
[10:48] Treasure Ballinger: Sam once showed me rental parcels on the ground level..........what are those, I've forgotten.
[10:48] Agenda Faromet: Treasure: yeah, those are residential.
[10:48] Tim Faith: treasure - i'm down there
[10:48] Baeric Constantine: If fees increase, I may have issue with paying them.
[10:48] Tim Faith: as are some of the rest of us
[10:48] Treasure Ballinger: still available?
[10:48] Treasure Ballinger: ok
[10:48] Tim Faith: there is one next to me that is open
[10:48] Faye Blackheart: there is one left
[10:48] Tim Faith: my castle is lonely, treasure
[10:48] Tim Faith: lol
[10:49] Treasure Ballinger: heeeee Ok, LM?
[10:49] hectorc2: Not only that, someone will open a competive bar association
[10:49] Dolci Woodget: How has the traffic been so far? Do you actually need a full sim or might a homestead work?
[10:49] Treasure Ballinger: been meaning to sell my silly mainland
[10:49] Tim Faith: dolci - we need to increase traffic
[10:49] Lyra Snowpaw: Well perhaps the whole problem is that we are on a private sim
[10:49] Treasure Ballinger: don't they only support 10 avs at a time, and meant for forest, water type sims?
[10:49] hectorc2: That is the problem
[10:49] Dolci Woodget: homestead supports 20
[10:49] Agenda Faromet: Dolci: we've only had a couple of events that exceeded 20 people, but we /have/ had a couple.
[10:49] Treasure Ballinger: ok...
[10:49] Starlight Darkmatter: Here is an example that works well: http://scilands.wordpress.com/bylaws/
[10:49] Juris Amat is offline.
[10:50] Tim Faith: i would like to have more people than 20 at future event
[10:50] Tim Faith: events
[10:50] Ellen: What about law-related services? I have found that people are not very interested in engaging the services of an attorney through SL, but I was thinking about renting space for divorce coaching, a new venture I'm starting. Would that be something appropriate for a rental from SLBA?
[10:50] Faye Blackheart: And you would have to rent the HS, unless you already own a private region, they are not available for purchase
[10:50] Dolci Woodget: what about renting a different venue for special events?
[10:50] Tim Faith: dolci - good idea
[10:50] Dolci Woodget: example
[10:50] Dolci Woodget: Sailors Cove straddles two full sims
[10:50] Treasure Ballinger: that's super interesting, Starlight, going to read up on the scilands....
[10:51] Agenda Faromet: Dolci -- I've been trying to convince Sam to do that for months.
[10:51] Lyra Snowpaw: I think so Ellen, as long you stay in good with your Bar
[10:51] Agenda Faromet: But it would mean shutting down the sim, and then everyone would have to move again.
[10:51] Faye Blackheart: Terribly sorry, but Dario and I must run....we are taking the cat to the vet for his yearly shots :/
[10:52] Treasure Ballinger: it's easy moving in SL though....
[10:52] Tim Faith: i move that we have a subcommittee to study this issue
[10:52] Agenda Faromet: Thank you for coming, Faye.
[10:52] Dolci Woodget: Agree, Yoss
[10:52] Baeric Constantine: go well Faye and Dario
[10:52] hectorc2: Aye
[10:52] Faye Blackheart: Good luck all, keep me apprised on a subcommittee!
[10:52] Agenda Faromet: Tim, may I make a statement for the record?
[10:52] Dolci Woodget: good luck to the kitty
[10:52] Starlight Darkmatter: It would be great if we could, in the future, team up to do some mixed reality events with Berkman Center
[10:52] Tim Faith: agenda, go ahead
[10:52] Faye Blackheart is offline.
[10:52] Darius Winterwolf is offline.
[10:54] Agenda Faromet: I just want it very clear that I do not mind if Justitia Village must close. I know Sam was worried about closing it down, because I have spent so much time and money building, maintaining, and improving it...but I am perfectly fine with packing it up if the best thing for us is to move to a small mainland plot, or to just use temporary event space for our CLEs. It's been a nice home, but I'd rather see the group thrive.
[10:54] zenitram is online.
[10:54] hectorc2: It is what it is. We have to reduce the overhead to compete
[10:54] Tim Faith: i think we need to study our options
[10:55] Tim Faith: i don't think we have to shut down just yet but we need to find the best way forward
[10:55] Lyra Snowpaw: I agree, I think we need to see what can be done about staying first and then moving if we must
[10:55] Lyra Snowpaw: Sam has spent a lot of money keeping us in business
[10:55] Tim Faith: but why not rent space at high traffic for certain events?
[10:55] Tim Faith: lyra, yes and i want to be respectful of that
[10:55] Tim Faith: and mindful of everyone'se efforts on this sim
[10:56] hectorc2: Agree, but he shouldn't spend more. It should have been a self financed operation by now.
[10:56] Lyra Snowpaw: however, I think there is a point well made that we probably don't need this much space. . .
[10:56] Tim Faith: or if we have this space, to properly utilize it
[10:56] hectorc2: agree
[10:56] Tim Faith: sam is breaking even presently, but that was not the history of this
[10:56] Agenda Faromet: The only reason we got this much space in the first place was so people could have homes here as well as offices.
[10:56] Tim Faith: hector will you chair this subcommittee?
[10:56] hectorc2: yes
[10:57] Lyra Snowpaw: well have we looked at asking another compatible group to come in on half the space?
[10:57] Tim Faith: and are there others that can participate with him?
[10:57] Tim Faith: i would like to review this issue at our meeting next month
[10:57] Starlight Darkmatter: I think we need a subcommittee for events and how to utilize the space
[10:57] Dolci Woodget: If anyone can help out, I volunteer to assist Hector
[10:57] Lyra Snowpaw: I will sit on that committee too
[10:57] hectorc2: thank you. Summers are slow for me. So I am open
[10:58] Tim Faith: thank you
[10:58] Lyra Snowpaw: So we have created a committee to look at the tier donation issue and another for the space use concerns?
[10:58] Tim Faith: please let me know when you next meet and i will join you
[10:58] hectorc2: you are very welcome
