Virtual Resident Reputation Management:
1. Establish an SL Group whose purpose is to serve as the basis of a "resident reputation management" system
a. the group would be based on the precept that certain residents wish to conduct their SL amidst a modicum of law and order
b. thus, to maintain membership in the group, a resident would voluntarily agree to abide by a standardized legal code
c. membership would be open to any and all who have not otherwise had their membership revoked
d. the key benefit of membership would be to maintain one's "resident in good standing" status
e. members would consent to be listed in a publicly-searchable directory showing their name and membership date
f. therefore, a member's membership date would establish how long the member has been a member in good standing
g. members would further consent to be listed in a publicly-searchable directory in the event they violate the code
h. therefore, all residents would have the ability to research the reputation of other members
2. The group's legal code would address:
a. rights and privileges of members
b. obligations and duties of members and officers
c. complaint, dispute resolution, and appeals processes
d. processes for electing officers and amending the code
e. etc.
3. Group Benefits
a. both members and non-member residents could utilize the reputation management features
b. residents could research whether members have any past infringements
c. the group would function as both a "seal of approval" and a "better business bureau"
d. residents would want the protection and assurances it provides
e. landlords would want to require renters belong as part of their covenant for renting land
f. merchants would want to advertise they belong in order to give an assurance to their customers of fair dealing
g. "badges" or "stars" or other recognition could be achieved by members maintaining their good standing for certain periods of time
4. Critical success factors
a. maturity and impartiality among those leading and adjudicating the group
b. clear and effective communication of the group's purpose
c. widespread dissemination of said communication of the group's purpose
d. ample time to prove itself as legitimate
e. ample time to prove itself as functional
f. enough willing and capable legal professionals to represent residents
g. enough willing and capable clerks to facilitate the required administration and recordkeeping
5. Likely criticisms
a. revoking membership and publishing reputation history are likely as far as enforcement can go
b. revoked members could simply reappear as "Alt" avatars (albeit with newer / less-prestigious membership dates)
c. nothing could be done to prevent others from creating competing "look alike" / fraudulent groups
